PORTALS is a meditation on the idea of the threshold or gateway, both natural and man-made. Photographing landscapes all over the world, my eye was constantly drawn to those spots which suggest an entrance to the unseen world. Many of the photographs were made in Celtic landscapes of Europe, where the entrance to the “other world’ is inherent in indigenous Celtic beliefs and mythology.
Many of these photographs were shot with black and white infra-red film, which records a part of the spectrum not visible to the eye. For me, the infra-red image conveys a hidden dimension – the genius loci – the spirit or unseen energy of a place.
These “gateway” images speak to the transitions we experience in our individual lives — and to the thresholds we face as a culture in times of change.
