A Mother – Daughter Dialogue

Grand Central Station.  July  boards the train for Dobbs Ferry and sits. Demeter sits down across from her.  Demeter takes out a bag of wool, knitting needles and starts to crochet.

JULY
You remind me of my mother.

DEMETER
Do I look motherly to you?

JULY
She used to crochet. My mother. She made me a beautiful blanket.

DEMETER
I’d keep it if I were you. It’s going to be a very cold winter.

JULY
Is that what they’re saying?

DEMETER
It’s what I’m saying.

JULY
Do you work for the Weather Channel?

DEMETER
Sort of.

 JULY
What do you do?

DEMETER
I’m sort of their “go to” gal on crops and weather-

JULY
Really! Wow! What a specialty! How do you train for a job like
that?

DEMETER
Agricultural college. Might say I was a natural at growing
things.

JULY
A green thumb – wow, I envy you. I can barely remember to water
my plants. I guess I’m just not that nurturing.

DEMETER
You’re WAY better off that way.

JULY
And I don’t get all this crazy weather we’ve been having –
droughts, fires, floods, hurricanes, twisters-

DEMETER
Yeah, a damn shame. I’d get that blanket out if I were you.

JULY
I don’t have it any more.

Demeter snorts.

JULY
I gave it back.

DEMETER
Worse than giving it away.

JULY
I buried her in it.

DEMETER
Well… that was a mistake.

July tears up and starts to cry.

DEMETER
I mean – she meant you to use it. She made it with love. Putting
it in the ground – (pauses) That was a mistake.

JULY
Yes, one of my many mistakes with her.
(searching  her bag)
No Damn tissues! Would you have a tissue?

Demeter rummages through her purse, pulls out a small bag.

DEMETER
Would you like some crackers? I snagged these from the Oyster
Bar.

JULY
Not hungry. Just…

DEMETER
Snotty.

JULY
(laughs) Yes. I’m snotty. No tissue?

DEMETER
Sorry. No tissues. Where you going?

JULY
Dobbs Ferry. The nursing home. I have business to finish up
there.

DEMETER
So you’re going to The Crossroads. I’m visiting a friend there.
Maybe we can share a ride.
